A reborn doll’s length gives you a starting point for choosing clothes, but it does not tell you everything about the fit. Body shape, limb position and the clothing brand matter too.

If the artist has supplied a clothing size, start there. An outfit that already fits your doll is another useful reference.

Start with the listing

Look for the doll’s length, body type and any clothing-size advice in its listing or care information.

Labels such as premature, tiny baby, newborn and 0–3 months vary between clothing brands. Check the brand’s size chart rather than assuming two newborn outfits will have the same measurements.

A reborn’s weight is not a reliable clothing-size guide. The weighting inside a doll does not necessarily match the body proportions of a baby of the same weight.

Compare with something that fits

Lay a well-fitting outfit flat and compare it with the measurements of the clothing you want to buy.

The most useful checks are usually the width across the chest, the shoulder-to-crotch length of a bodysuit and the leg length of a sleepsuit. For hats and shoes, use head and foot measurements if the artist provides them.

Avoid forcing bent limbs straight to measure your doll. Follow their natural position and use existing clothing as a guide where possible.

Choose openings that make dressing easier

An outfit can be the right size and still be awkward to put on.

Front-opening sleepsuits and clothes with generous neck openings can make dressing easier. Check that sleeves and cuffs allow hands to pass through without pulling on fingers, and that fitted feet leave enough room for the toes.

A slightly relaxed fit is often easier to manage than a tight one. Avoid stretching clothing over the face or using a limb as leverage to pull an outfit into place.

Consider the doll’s body

Clothing sits differently on a cloth-bodied doll and a full-body doll.

If your reborn has a cloth body, check whether the neckline and sleeves cover as much of it as you would like. Dolls with partial vinyl limbs may need longer sleeves or trousers if you want the joins covered.

These are styling choices rather than faults. An outfit that suits one sculpt may sit differently on another.

Before putting on a new outfit

Check for rough seams, loose fastenings and trims that could catch on rooted hair or eyelashes. Follow the artist’s advice about dark or strongly dyed fabrics, particularly for longer periods of wear.

For the dressing method itself, see how to dress a reborn doll.
