For a first reborn, focus on the individual doll rather than trying to buy everything a collector might own. Choose the appearance, size and construction you want, check the seller carefully and leave room in your budget for delivery.
You can start with one doll and a simple place to keep it. A pram, display cabinet and large wardrobe are optional.
Make a short list of preferences
- Sleeping or awake, and the expression you like.
- The doll’s length and weight, including whether you can comfortably lift and hold it.
- Vinyl with a cloth body or another clearly described construction.
- Painted or rooted hair and the amount of care you want to do.
- Whether you want to dress, hold, display or photograph it.
Compare photographs and videos, but remember that neither can show exactly how a doll will feel to you. Ask about the body, weighting and movement rather than assuming all reborns feel alike.
Set the whole purchase budget
Include the doll, delivery and any extras you actually need. Use the price guide as context, then compare actual listings. Do not treat a low or high price as proof of authenticity.
Avoid buying on the assumption that you can later sell for the same amount. Condition, demand and the individual doll affect resale, and a quick sale is not guaranteed.
Check the listing and seller
Look for photographs of the actual doll, its sculpt and artist, materials, dimensions, condition and a clear list of included items. Ask whether any magnets are fitted and whether a certificate of authenticity is included.
A seller should be able to answer ordinary questions without pressuring you to pay immediately. Read the payment, delivery and returns information before committing. The buying guide and listing checklist cover this in more detail.
Check what comes with the doll
Use the individual listing, not a typical unboxing video, to establish what is included. An outfit, blanket, dummy or certificate may be shown in photographs without all being part of the sale.
A decorative birth or adoption certificate is not necessarily the sculptor’s certificate of authenticity. Ask which paperwork is supplied if the wording is unclear.
Prepare for arrival
- Choose a clean, padded surface to unpack on and keep scissors away from the doll.
- Check the doll and included items against the listing.
- Keep packaging and photograph any delivery damage before discarding anything.
- Read the care instructions before grooming, cleaning or changing accessories.
- Contact the seller about an unexpected problem before attempting a repair.
Get used to handling it
Support the head and body when lifting. Do not pull on arms or legs or force a pose. For vinyl dolls with cloth bodies, keep the doll dry and away from direct heat and sunlight.
Follow the care overview for cleaning, hair and clothing. You do not need to use a product simply because it is sold for reborns.
Give yourself room to decide
You might enjoy holding the doll straight away, prefer displaying it or need time to work out what you like. There is no test of whether you have “bonded” correctly.
If the purchase does not meet its description, address that with the seller. If your preferences simply change, check the agreed returns terms rather than assuming the same options apply to every seller.
